University Student Health

Empowering universities to enhance student health through population-level health intelligence - identifying at-risk students early, tracking health throughout the academic lifecycle, and building the evidence base to improve outcomes.

The Challenge

1 in 5 UK undergraduates report mental health difficulties, yet 57% self-report a mental health issue while only 24% have a diagnosis. The gap between prevalence and identification is the central problem - the majority of struggling students are invisible to the institution until they disengage, underperform or leave. With 45% of English universities facing deficit and international enrolment declining, every student who doesn't complete represents both a welfare failure and a direct financial event.

Our Approach

Parachute's Student Health Intelligence System deploys a lifecycle approach: from registration through to year-end. Students complete a health assessment upon enrolment, receiving personalised health resources and signposting to support services. Vulnerable students are identified early and funnelled to student services. Pulse checks at key stress points track mental health throughout the year. Annual reports provide the university with a complete picture of student health by demographics, correlations between health and academic outcomes, and evaluation of support service effectiveness.

Key Outcomes

  • Early identification and funnelling of vulnerable students to support services
  • Population-level health intelligence across all 5 Parachute pillars
  • Correlations between student health, demographics and academic outcomes
  • Evidence-based evaluation of support service effectiveness and ROI

“The most significant gap in UK student health is not a gap in services. It is a gap in intelligence.”
